Preparing to quit

Among the reasons why people who quit smoking may relapse, lack of preparation is the most common. So take some steps to get yourself ready to quit.

One way to prepare is to create a smoking journal - somewhere you can record your thoughts and observations about your addiction, as well as make plans for your estimated quit date.

Start thinking about how nice it will be to say "no thanks, I don't smoke." Envision your life as a nonsmoker. What will it feel like? Try it on for size in your mind. No running to the store for cigarettes, more cash in your pocket, no more yellowed fingers, and less work cleaning the house.

A smoking journal can also be a place to make lists of the consequences of smoking and the benefits of quitting. You'd also want to note complications, such as nicotine withdrawal, that you can anticipate along the road to recovery.

As you progress toward a smokefree life, remember that smoking is more than just a habit - it's an addiction. Overcoming addictions is a long-term process. Don't look for quick fixes. Luckily, along the road you can also expect to see guideposts, as there are some common stages that many people experience as they try to quit.
